I just finished this extraordinary book. It is part gene-science mystery, part family memoir, Ms. Linder relates a winding tale of how five generations ended up with a confounding unique illness and all of the setbacks and achievements along the way as doctors and scientists tease out some answers over the decades. Although my description of this story may seem grim, she tells the tale with a light touch, highlighting with considerable good humor the humanity and bravery of a family drawn into a shared struggle they weren't even aware of until just a few years ago. It was a page-turner.One of the interesting things to me is how she turned a decades-long set of seemingly unrelated strange illnesses into a taut, plot-driven drama. Given the number of family members involved, it could easily have been a Dostoyevsky-an desk-buster. Instead it's a zippy 250pp read with what feels like a intro-level genetics course sprinkled throughout. It'll make you feel both brainy and thoughtful.Ms. Linder connects her family's story to a number of developments and unusual cases from the dawn of modern medicine through today. She addresses the many problems of end-of-life decisions and family deaths with great thoughtfulness and empathy. In these ways the book is far more than a memoir. Now in her mid-30's, Joselin has seen several members of her father's family - including her father - die from an untreatable disease that also defied classification. The disease was spread among several generations of the Linder family. While working with doctors and geneticists in Boston, a genome was discovered which made testing for the gene easy to determine what family members would be affected.Genetic investigation has come incredibly far in the last 30 years. I simply don't have the scientific vocabulary needed to write the technical things in this review. But Linder does a good job at explaining and defining; I figure I understood about 3/4 of what she wrote. Linder writes about the lives of the her paternal family and explains how the disease - still unnamed - began with a genetic mutation in the body of her paternal great-grandmother and was distributed down the proverbial genetic family ladder. Back to the issue of genetic testing. There are actually two issues at work. Would you want to know if you hold the prospect of contracting Huntington's Disease or the disease the Linder family has? The implications are astounding to the way your live your life. The other testing is that of a fetus to see if he or she carries the gene of the disease. And if the tests showed you were pregnant with a baby with the disease, would you have an abortion? Linder writes about the genetic testing routinely done these days of prospective parents.Joselin Linder's book is well-written and I learned a lot. I could have done without most of the coming-of-age parts but I guess that living under the scythe of life or death made her decisions and thoughts more unique than the average 30 year old.
This book was really fascinating! It made me think about how precious life is and horrific it can become. It was funny, scientific but in laymen's terms and hopeful. Modern day medicine has come so far and this book helps explain how one particular mutated gene can devastate a family while showcasing the talents of our medical professionals. I highly recommend The Family Gene as a good read and a warm memoir.
Reading a book about genes, biology, anatomy, etc would normally be nowhere near my must read list, but this book is no boring science read. It's a mystery, a love story, and a family album. Through the heartbreak there is hope. The author weaves humor throughout the story and tells it beautifully. I'll recommend to everyone.

Researchers and the author search for a cure and it is race against time. This book made me think about the fragility of life and the courage it takes for one to face a fatal disease every day. This memoir is a great book, smart, thrilling, heart warming and a page turner you won't want to put down. I highly recommend The Family Gene!
Early on I had some doubts. The narrative voice seemed to alternate between middle school science class and a blog post tame enough to share with your parents, but soon enough the author found the right one to narrate the fascinating tale of an unknown malady that plagued, and killed, in five generations of her family. The villain? A genetic mutation, or, as the author prefers, variant, that affects the liver (Is that a spoiler? If so I apologize.) Will the villain be caught? That would be a spoiler. I recommend this for anyone who enjoys a medical mystery, in this case a real one, but also for those interested in genealogy and genetics, but who need an easy to digest review of the scientific basics.
